Tattersalls Ltd is expanding in South Africa after having secured a licence to operate a total of 2,000 machines in the country. Tattersalls managing director Duncan Fischer was elated with the latest development and said Tattersalls intends to establish a very strong foothold in the contry.
Victorian-based gaming giant Tattersall’’s Ltd is doubling the number of its machines in South Africa, after securing a gaming licence from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Gambling Board to operate in the eastern part of the country.

The gaming licence allows Tattersall’’s to own, distribute and operate 1,000 gaming machines in KZN.

Thuo Gaming KZN (Pty) Ltd. is signed as the licensee company, the majority of which is owned by Tattersall’’s, while the rest of the shares belong to partners in the province.

Tattersall’’s managing director Duncan Fischer said the licence costs about $200,000 and is effective for an indefinite period of time. However, the licence is renewable annually as long as both Tattersall’’s and the KZN Board mutually agree to extend.

“We now have licences for 2000 machines in total and this confirms our intention to be one of the major providers of wide area gaming in (South Africa),” Fischer told reporters.

Tattersall’’s already has a licence to operate 1000 gaming machines in the Western Cape.

Meanwhile, Tattersall’’s still hangs in mid-air when it comes to its rivalry with another gaming giant, Tabcorp, for a potential merger with gaming group UNiTAB Holdings Ltd.

UNiTAB shareholders are set to vote on the proposed $4 billion merger with Tattersall’’s before August ends.
